@_dove99: Lena had called Miu thirty-seven times. Not all at once. She hadn't completely lost her mind. The first calls had been the evening of the gala. Then the following morning Then that evening and the next day. By the third day, Lena had forced herself to stop because staring at Miu's name while the phone rang endlessly was becoming unbearable. She tried messages instead. -Please talk to me. Nothing. -I know you're angry. You have every right to be. I just need to know you're okay. Nothing. -Miu, please. Nothing. Now two weeks had passed since the gala and Lena felt like she was slowly losing her mind. She had gone to Miu's apartment three times. The first time, nobody answered. Same again with the second. The third time, Bam opened the door. Bam had always liked Lena. Apparently that had changed. “Miu doesn't want to see you.” “I just want to talk.” Lena begs. “She doesn't.” “Is she okay?” Bam's expression softened slightly. “She's getting there.” “Can you tell her…” “No.” Then the door closed. Lena had stood in the hallway for another five minutes anyway. She tried their coffee shop. Nothing. The little restaurant they went to whenever Lena could escape work early. Nothing. The park where Miu liked to run. Nothing. Miu had simply disappeared from Lena's life and Lena was miserable. Her family noticed. Of course they noticed. Her father asked twice whether something was wrong. Lena blamed work. Her mother asked why she looked exhausted. Work. Everything was work and no one questioned it. The only person who would have known she was lying wasn't speaking to her. Anan had noticed too and he had been surprisingly kind about it. Their engagement remained mostly for show. They attended two dinners together after the announcement and had already fallen into an unspoken agreement not to discuss whatever was clearly happening in Lena's personal life. He didn't love her. She didn't love him. Everyone involved knew the engagement was ridiculous except the people who had arranged it. Lena spent most evenings alone in her apartment. Miu had been there so often over the last two years that reminders of her were everywhere. A shampoo bottle in Lena's shower. A phone charger beside the bed. Her favourite tea in the kitchen. A pair of slippers tucked beneath the coffee table. Lena couldn't bring herself to move any of it. She slept badly. Ate when she remembered. Checked her phone constantly. But Miu never called. . The knock came shortly after nine on a Thursday night. Lena was curled at one end of the sofa wearing an old T-shirt and shorts, barely paying attention to the television. She looked towards the door and for one ridiculous second, her heart jumped. Miu. She was on her feet before she could stop herself. Lena crossed the apartment quickly and pulled open the door and her smile disappeared. “Mum.” Her mother stood in the hallway holding her handbag. “Don't sound so disappointed.” “I wasn't.” “You were.” Lena sighed. “What are you doing here?” “Can I come in?” “Of course.” Lena stepped aside. Her mother entered and looked around. Lena suddenly became aware of the state of the apartment. There was a wine glass on the coffee table from yesterday. Two takeaway containers sat on the kitchen counter and a blanket was crumpled across the sofa. Her mother noticed all of it but didn't comment on it. That was worse. “Do you want tea?” “No, sweetheart.” Lena nodded. “Okay.” Her mother sat on the sofa and Lena reluctantly joined her. For several seconds, neither spoke. Her mother looked towards the television. “What are you watching?” Lena followed her gaze. “No idea.” Her mother smiled sadly. Then she looked at her. “Miu hasn't been around lately. I haven't seen her since the gala." Lena looked down at her hands. “We had a falling out.” “What happened?” “Nothing.” “Lena.” “It's no big deal.” Her mother was quiet and Lena could feel her watching her. Eventually, her mother asked. “Are you in love with Miu?” CONTINUATION IN COMMENTS ⬇️ #lenamiu #ThaiGL #wlw

PART 5️⃣ Lena cried against her shoulder. For two years, she'd been terrified of this moment. She'd imagined shouting, anger, disappointment. Instead, her mother was holding her.
After a while, Lena whispered. “Dad's going to be furious.”
Her mother kissed the top of her head. “Your father has been furious since approximately 1989.”
A laugh burst through Lena's tears and her mother smiled. “I'll deal with him.”
“You make that sound easy.”
“It won't be.” Lena pulled back and her mother wiped the tears from her cheeks. “But that's my problem. Not yours.”
Lena looked at her. “And Miu?”
Her mother's expression softened. “That's all yours.”
Lena's smile disappeared. “What if she doesn't want me anymore?”
“Then you respect that.” Lena nodded. “But if you love her as much as I think you do, you make sure she knows just how much and that you’ll spend the rest of your beautiful lives making it up to her.”
For the first time in two weeks, something inside her felt lighter. Lena looked down at her phone on the table.
“Are you going to message her?”
Lena thought about it, then shook her head. “No.”
“No?”
“She clearly wants space.” Her mother nodded approvingly. “I've spent two years asking her to be patient while I was too scared to do anything.” She looked at the engagement ring also sitting on the table. “I think it's time I actually do something.”
Her mother squeezed her shoulder. “There’s my girl.”
Lena rested her head against her.
Tomorrow would be awful. There would be arguments. Her father would shout. The engagement would end. There would probably be lawyers and angry phone calls and enough family drama to last several years.
And after all of it, Miu still might not come back. But Lena finally understood something Miu had been trying to tell her for two years. Choosing her couldn't happen behind a locked apartment door. If Lena wanted Miu back, she couldn't simply tell her she loved her…he had to finally be brave enough to let everyone else know too.

PART 4️⃣ Lena sighed. “There's basically a wall of them around her. Bam answered the door last time. I think she would've physically thrown me down the stairs if I hadn't left.”
“Probably best you did.”
“I've gone everywhere.”
Her mother frowned. “Everywhere?”
“All our places. The coffee shop where we met. Our restaurant. The park. The little bar near her apartment.” Lena's eyes filled again.
“Nothing.” She looked helplessly at her mother. “She's a ghost.”
Her mother nodded sadly. “Maybe she needs time.”
“What if she's done?” Lena's voice became very quiet. “What if I've lost her?”
Her mother took her hand. “Then we'll fix it.”
Lena stared at her. “What?”
“We'll fix it.”
“Mum, this isn't a broken dishwasher.”
“I know that.”
“You can't just fix someone's heart.”
“No. But we can stop making things harder.” Her mother squeezed her hand. “First, we're going to deal with this ridiculous engagement.”
Lena's eyes widened. “What about Dad?” Her mother tutted. The sound was so dismissive that Lena almost laughed. “I'm serious.”
“So am I.”
“Mum, he'll lose his mind.”
“Then he can find it again.”
Lena stared at her. “What about the merger?”
“I have been listening to your father talk about important mergers for thirty-two years, long before you were even born. I promise you, he'll survive.”
Despite herself, Lena laughed. Her mother smiled. “What about Anan’s family?”
“They'll survive too.”
“But…”
“Lena.” Her mother took both of her hands. “You listen to me. I don't care about the company. I don't care what anyone at those ridiculous dinners thinks. I don't care whether your father has to spend the next six months apologising to every businessman in Bangkok.”
Lena's eyes started filling again. Her mother reached up and cupped her cheek. “My baby's happiness comes first.”
Lena broke and she threw herself into her mother's arms. Her mother held her tightly. “I'm sorry.” Lena sobbed.
“Stop apologising.”
“I thought you'd be disappointed.”
Her mother's arms tightened. “Never for you loving someone.”

FINAL 6️⃣ At the same time, five miles east, Miu lay curled on her side in the middle of her bed, surrounded by darkness. Sleep hadn't come easily since the gala. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Lena standing at the end of that hotel corridor, crying as the elevator doors closed between them.
She pulled the oversized grey hoodie tighter around herself, burying her face into the collar. It hadn't been intentional, at least that was what Miu had told herself when she'd pulled it from the back of her wardrobe earlier that evening. It was Lena's, left behind months ago after one of the countless nights she'd spent here. It still smelled faintly like her perfume.
Miu's phone sat face down on the bedside table. She hadn't answered a single call or message in two weeks.
Miu closed her eyes and curled tighter inside Lena's hoodie, gripping the sleeves in her fists. She was still angry. Still heartbroken. Still unsure if she could ever trust Lena with her heart again. But despite how desperately Miu wished she could hate her, one painful truth remained…she loved Lena so much.

PART 3️⃣
“Oh, my baby.”
“I'm sorry.”
“No.” Her mother held her tighter. “I'm sorry.” Lena pulled back to see her mother was crying openly now. “We should have seen it.” Lena stared at her. “We should have seen what was happening. We should have made sure you knew you could tell us.”
“Mum…”
“No. Let me say it.” She wiped her eyes. “I'm your mother. You spent two years hiding the person you loved because you were frightened of what your own family would think.” Her voice cracked. “I am so sorry.”
Lena shook her head. “You didn't know.”
“I should have.”
Then, unexpectedly, her mother laughed. “What?” Lena frowned.
Her mother shook her head. “It feels so obvious now.”
“What does?”
“You and Miu.” Lena stared at her as her mother laughed through her tears. “The way you two looked at each other was far from friendly.”
Lena gave a watery laugh “We were excellent at hiding it.”
“You brought the same 'friend' to practically every event for two years.”
“She's my best friend too.” Lena protested.
“Who looked at you like you personally put the moon in the sky.”
Lena covered her face. “Oh God.”
“And you weren’t much better.”
“When did you realise?”
Her mother's smile slowly faded. “The gala, when Miu walked out.” Her mother paused. “You looked terrified and I watched you go after her. You didn't even look at your father. You didn't look at anyone. You just followed Miu.” She touched Lena's knee. “Then you came back about half an hour later with your eyes all puffy and then spent the rest of the night staring at your phone.”
Her mother smiled sadly. “That's when it hit me.”
Lena swallowed. “Right.”
“How is she?”
“I don't know.”
“What do you mean?”
“She won't speak to me.” Lena looked towards her phone on the coffee table. “It's been two weeks.”
“And nothing?”
“Nothing.” Her voice cracked again. “I've called. I've texted. I've gone to her apartment.”
“You went there?”
“Her friends hate me.”
“Understandable.”
“Mum.”
“Sorry.”

PART 2️⃣ The smile faded into something softer. “We sat together after that and talked for almost two hours. My phone was going wild but she’s all I could focus on.”
“And then?”
“I asked for her number.”
Her mother's eyebrows rose. “You?”
“I can be charming.”
“Apparently.”
Lena laughed again. It felt strange after crying for so long. “We started dating not long after that and I didn't tell anyone because…”
The happiness disappeared. “You were afraid of us.” Her mother whispered.
Lena's eyes filled again. “I was afraid of Dad.”
Her mother nodded slowly. “I kept thinking I'd tell you eventually. Then a month became six months, and six months became a year.”
She looked towards the floor. “Miu was so patient.” Her voice cracked.
Her mother squeezed her hands. “She never pushed. She never asked me for anything. She'd come to events and let me introduce her as my friend. We'd arrive separately. Leave separately.”
Lena started crying again. “I wouldn't even hold her hand if I thought someone might see.”
“Oh, Lena.”
“She kept telling me she could wait.” Her voice dissolved into a sob. “She waited two years.”
Her mother moved closer. “And then Dad arranged the engagement.”
Lena nodded. “I knew three days before the gala.”
“You didn't tell Miu?”
Lena shook her head. “I tried but every time I looked at her, I couldn't do it.” She covered her face. “We were together the night before. She was lying beside me talking about some holiday she wanted us to take.”
Her breathing became uneven. “I knew I was engaged to someone else, and I just lay there holding her.”
Her mother had started crying now too.
“I thought if I could explain it properly, she'd understand it was only business. That it didn't mean anything.” Lena laughed bitterly. “How stupid is that?”
Her mother said nothing.
“Then Dad announced it.” Lena closed her eyes. “The way she looked at me.” Lena's voice broke completely. “I've never seen her look at me like that.”
Her mother pulled her against her chest again. Lena clung to her. “I broke her heart.”
Her mother stroked her hair. “I broke her heart because I was too scared to disappoint everyone.”

PART 1️⃣ Lena stopped breathing and she slowly looked up.
Her mother wasn't angry…she wasn't horrified…she just looked sad.
Lena stared at her. “What?”
“Are you in love with her?”
Lena opened her mouth but nothing came out. She had spent two years terrified of this exact conversation.
Two years imagining what would happen if her parents found out.
The disappointment.
The arguments.
Now her mother was sitting in front of her asking the question. Her face crumpled before she could get a word out.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Lena covered her face. The first sob tore out of her so suddenly it hurt.
Her mother moved immediately, wrapping her arms around her daughter. “Lena.”
“I love her.” The words came through her hands. “I love her so much.”
Her mother pulled her closer and that only made Lena cry harder. Her shoulders shook as her mother wrapped both arms around her. “I'm sorry.” Lena choked out.
Her mother pulled back enough to look at her. “Don't apologise.”
Lena wiped at her face. “We've been together for two years.”
Her mother's eyes widened slightly. “Two years?”
Lena nodded as she laughed through a sob. “I met her at a coffee shop.”
Her mother reached for Lena's hands and Lena held on tightly. “I'd had this awful meeting. Dad had spent the entire morning shouting because some deal was going wrong, and I left because I couldn't stand being in the office anymore.”
Her breathing hitched. “I went into this little coffee shop I'd never been to before and Miu was there.” Despite everything, Lena smiled at the memory. “She was arguing with the barista.”
Her mother laughed softly.
“It wasn't even an argument really. They'd given her an extra coffee by mistake and she was trying to give it back. The barista kept telling her to keep it, and Miu was insisting she'd only paid for one.”
Lena wiped another tear away. “I was standing behind her, so she turned around and gave it to me.”
“Just like that?”
“She said I looked like I needed it.”
Her mother smiled. “She could read you right from the start.”
“Oh yes.” Lena laughed weakly. “I thought she was so beautiful.”
