@fire.photos.dc: 🔥 National Wildfire Briefing & Fire Weather Outlook | August 25, 2026 The United States remains at National Preparedness Level 5. We saw moderate initial attack activity with 225 new fires yesterday and 13 new large incidents. Crews contained 7 large fires, leaving 86 uncontained large fires nationwide. 🖤 LINE-OF-DUTY LOSS: It is with deep sadness that we report the loss of an incident support crewmember with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, who passed away on August 23rd following a fatal medical emergency while assigned to the Frijoles incident in New Mexico. Our deepest condolences go out to their family, friends, and crew. 🌩️ FIRE WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS: The West: Lightning activity trends downward today, but extreme heat (100°F to 115°F) dominates lower elevations in SE California, AZ, and NM as the monsoon wanes. Cascades & Sierra Front: Locally breezy westerly winds are expected along the eastern slopes of the southern Cascades, SE Oregon, and the Sierra Front. Plains & South: Abnormally hot conditions, gusty southerly winds, and single-digit to low-double-digit RH persist from Texas into southern Oklahoma and Arkansas. Rockies: A moist front brings better wetting thunderstorm coverage to Colorado (east of the Divide) and NE New Mexico.
