I have never split the bill with anyone that expected me to pay for anything other than what I ordered. I don't get that anyone does that.

Is that an American thing to slip like that ? I've never heard of that. Either someone is inviting everyone or everyone pay their share ! When serveurs don't want to, one pay and people will rembourse using the ticket !

If my friends and I are going eat the same amount of food and drinking the same amount of drinks, then yes we split. If I or someone else can't afford to fit that bill we let someone know ahead of time. It doesn't kill the vibe, we still want you there. We also don't want you to feel like it's going to bother anyone. Your friends should make you feel like you want them there.
