@user8461916368584: Sandra Bullock Reveals the Heartbreaking Choice She Gave Her Kids During Bryan Randall’s ALS Battle Sandra Bullock has opened up about how she helped her children face one of the hardest chapters of their lives. Her longtime partner, photographer Bryan Randall, spent three years privately battling ALS before he D*ed on August 5, 2023, at age 57. Bullock said her children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, always knew what was happening. As Randall became bedridden and received care inside Bullock’s home, the physical changes became impossible to hide. “They could see,” Bullock said on the “SmartLess” podcast. But each child handled the situation differently. About two years before Randall’s D*eath, Louis decided being around the situation too much was not emotionally healthy for him. Bullock respected that boundary. She said she never wanted her son to feel like he had to become “the man of the family” or carry responsibilities far beyond his age. Instead, Louis helped his mother with things he felt comfortable handling while giving himself space when he needed it. Bullock said she also tried to let both children guide the difficult conversations. If they noticed something or asked a question, she would explain what was happening and ask how they wanted to deal with it. Randall had chosen to keep his ALS diagnosis private, and Bullock and his family honored that wish throughout his treatment. For Bullock, protecting the man she loved also meant protecting her children’s right to process his illness in their own way. Sometimes helping children through grief means giving them permission to step away when it becomes too heavy.
