@normanrockwellmuseum: Stunning details in Kadir Nelson's illustration titled, "Harlem On My Mind."   Drawing upon the rich cultural legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, Kadir Nelson created this vibrant composition as a tribute to the artists, writers, musicians, and activists who shaped Harlem as a center of Black intellectual and creative life. Produced for the cover of The New Yorker, the painting celebrates the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and Harlem’s enduring influence on American culture and civil rights history.   Nelson conceived the work as a layered visual homage to influential figures associated with the Harlem Renaissance and its legacy, including artists Aaron Douglas, William H. Johnson, Norman Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Horace Pippin, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Archibald Motley, and Palmer Hayden; performers Billie Holiday and Nicholas Brothers; writers James Baldwin and Zora Neale Hurston; and activist Malcolm X.
