We run cows on cornstalks here in the winter and if there’s a lot of corn on the ground from wind or whatever we put sodium bicarbonate(baking soda) in their water tanks to keep em from bloating

I don’t know if there’s any in your part of the country but. I buy thousand gallon anhydrous tanks and convert them into fuel trailers.

bicarb is a cheap and effective acid buff, you will always get losses with clover unfortunately. spray it out here but the misses around field gaps are the first thing grazed, they just gorge on it

Yea definitely too high sugar for your roughage. Just ate too much clover I’d say. Almost need to mow it off slow em down on it

Free choice mineral with rumensin really helps prevent bloat and helps with feed conversion so they will gain better. Some animals are more susceptible to bloat than others. We condition ours so they can handle grazing 3rd cut alfalfa. The benefits of how much they gain on good feed outweighs the odd one you could lose over time.

Dawn dish soap and their water will help from bloat. I had a bloat proned steer most of the time alfalfa was the cause. had to switch to dry like what you did but as soon as the fresh green sprouts came he bloated again

My dad use to throw out bags of baking soda when we ran them on quarters of stalks and alpha to help stop the bloat

Do you have road fuel (taxed) and farm fuel (non-taxed)? What is the price up there? Farm fuel $4.90ish here. Road tax is .50 so 5.40ish USD

That baking soda helps with the acidosis. But what’s weird is if they been on that pasture for any decent amount of time like they didn’t just get put in there, they should’ve been fine. Did it maybe get stuck on its back? They can eat anything as long as they’re built up on it.

We used to keep 300 gallons of gas around and 2500 gallons of diesel, no one ever took the diesel but our gas tank always ended up empty way before it should have been so now we just get slip tanks of gas so people don’t come into the yard and take 250 gallons of it at a time
