Deacon Gandy :
Faith is such an interesting thing. How some can have it and live by it yet some cannot comprehend a higher power. Both sides unmoving in the stance yet they try their best to “bring the other to their senses” my faith came to me in a moment of crisis, of such surrender, pleading for what I was told as a child to be true. I was in a foreign place, with no one I knew there to help me, or provide comfort apart from my father who was at deaths door. The man who raised me, my best friend, as a kid who was attached to him at the hip, he was my superhero. It seemed so impossible for him to be in that state. I cried out to the Lord for a miracle, that if he truly existed I needed him there and now. I made a deal that I would pledge my life to him if he saved my dad. No bright light came to me, no divine voice, no burning bush, no trumpets, just silence. Till I heard the ambience come back of heart beat monitors, the beeping of IV machines, and it remained that way for probably 20-30 minutes. I recall such serenity in that moment, that I did my part, I got him there I told the doctors what they needed to know in order to start saving his life. Then I fulfilled my physical duties and proceeded to do the only other thing I could which was pray, then it was done. The peace that came to me after such a form of complete surrender; giving that fear, anxiety, my duties and burdens to God. I’d call it divine. My answer to whether or not a higher power heard my plea came when the doctor emerged from beyond those doors, and updated me on how severe it was and how lucky we got. The words that still give me goosebumps to this day were “we cannot explain how but it is an act of God that he survived” had I arrived any later he would’ve succumbed to I.T valve necrosis, blood poisoning and a rupture throughout his intestinal tract. I just so happened to wake up that night, happened to see him in the floor of the bathroom in that hotel room, and I just so happened to make a rough call to carry him out of that room, down 3 flights of stairs, to the car, then drove him to the hospital. All in the knick of time. I just turned 14. Faith saved my dad.
