In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) directed by Quentin Tarantino, Rick Dalton’s breakdown scene, the one with “don’t cry in front of Mexicans” is one of the least scripted moments in the whole film. Here’s some lesser known trivia. The flubbed-lines scene on the set of Lancer and the breakdown that follows weren’t in the original script: they came from an idea Leonardo DiCaprio had on set, and only afterward did Tarantino build the monologue in Dalton’s caravan around the idea of Travis Bickle alone in his apartment in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, drawing on Robert De Niro’s performance. On the Lancer set, two versions of the same scene were actually shot: one with Dalton nailing his lines as the villain, the other with him flubbing everything after rehearsing the night before over whiskey sours; in the end, the flubbed version was the one used. For the monologue, there was no script at all: Tarantino just gave DiCaprio subjects to vent about in full improvisation, including his anger toward fellow castmate Jim Stacy and his embarrassment in front of the young co-star on set, only stepping in to suggest a new topic whenever the actor ran out of ideas. The scene was shot in a single fixed setup, three takes run back to back until the entire reel ran out, then stitched together into the jump cuts seen in the finished film.
