@cbsmiami: Florida's cattle ranchers are criticizing President Donald Trump's move to import 300,000 tons of tariff-free beef in an effort to lower prices for consumers. Trump said the deal would reduce beef prices by 25% below current market prices, but the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and Florida Cattlemen's Association said they were disappointed, warning that government intervention could disrupt the cattle market and discourage ranchers from rebuilding their herds. Beef prices are expected to rise 10.7% this year, with the average retail price reaching a record $9.64 per pound in April. Drought, the COVID-19 pandemic and rising operating costs have pushed the U.S. cattle herd to a 75-year low. Florida, which ranks ninth nationally in beef production, has also faced severe drought, while calf prices have risen sharply.
