Research shows these rafts are dynamic, not suicidal. Each ant’s waxy, water-repellent body traps tiny air bubbles that let them float and breathe, even when partially submerged. The ants link together tightly with their jaws and legs to form a living, flexible structure that can last for days. And rather than dying in place, the ants continually move and rotate positions in a process scientists call “treadmilling,” where some ants from below crawl up while others move down to take their place.
