Today our family served with our church, preparing meals for people in our community. All over the area, Waters Edge teams were out serving in different ways, rocking our WEC shirts. After we finished, we headed to Costco, where we saw several other families in their shirts who had obviously been serving too. I wondered off from my crew while shopping when an older couple stopped me and asked if my church was “the one that gives out earplugs because the worship is so loud.” I said yes, and they very kindly told me they hoped I wouldn’t take it the wrong way, but they were concerned about the volume and felt like our church might be missing an opportunity to reach people because of it. I've heard our pastor mention that they sometimes receive these types of comments but I had never experienced it first hand. They asked if I would share their concerns with church leadership. I listened and thanked them and told them that I was on the worship team and play the bass. They laughed and told me they were former musicians, so we ended up talking about music, guitars, church and kids. They asked how I felt about the volume with a 9-year-old daughter, and I shared that when she is with us we don’t sit right next to the speakers, plus she has an awesome kids environment designed just for her. I also told them that I’m actually really excited that she’s growing up in a time when Christian music comes in so many different styles. There are many more options than when I was young, and I love that kids can find music they genuinely enjoy which is also pointing them toward Jesus. I tried to steer the conversation to become less about how loud our church is and more about our community. I talked about our morning serving as a family, online services options, our current Newport News campus and how our new campus would be right behind Cracker Barrel in 2027. Then they mentioned they were spiritually fed through listening to sermons online yet missed fellowship but couldn't find where they liked the music due to the the loudness. And here’s the funny part… They had never actually been to one of our campuses. Everything they knew was based on what they had heard from friends. So I told them, I’d be serving tomorrow and that they should come. It was nice that they felt comfortable enough to stop me and share their concerns. And although it was an awkward Costco conversation, it turned into an invite. I love that church doesn’t have to fit inside one little box. Worship doesn’t have to sound the same for every generation. If you don’t like it loud, I respect that! But I also love that there are people connecting with Jesus because the music feels current and speaks to them. Jesus certainly didn’t live inside a box, and David danced… so I’m pretty sure there’s room for all of us. They thanked me for chatting and I told them I hoped I’d see them tomorrow. Who knows if they will actually come but it was certainly eye opening. So no pressure, Pastor Stu… but if my Costco friends show up tomorrow, bring it! More than anything, I hope they walk away feeling the Spirit regardless of the descibles of the music I know I will. I almost told them that I also enjoy learning hip-hop dances from TikTok to Christian music… But I figured I’d already given them enough to process for one Costco trip.
