🐘🌿 Spent the most unforgettable days at Chai Lai Orchid — an eco-lodge and elephant sanctuary in the mountains of Chiang Mai dedicated to ethical elephant tourism, rescue, and community support. What makes this place different is their focus on no elephant riding, no performances, and allowing elephants to simply exist in a more natural environment while being cared for by local Karen mahouts whose families have worked alongside elephants for generations. Guests are able to feed, walk beside, and bathe rescued elephants in the river while learning about conservation and humane elephant care. The sanctuary also supports local hill tribe communities and helps fund programs for vulnerable women and girls through their social enterprise initiatives. A portion of proceeds goes toward education, employment opportunities, and elephant rescue efforts. Ethical elephant tourism in Thailand can be complex, and no sanctuary is considered “perfect,” but Chai Lai Orchid is widely recognized for moving away from exploitative tourism practices and prioritizing welfare, education, and coexistence over entertainment.
