Your menstrual cycle matters when testing reproductive hormones because hormone concentrations change significantly throughout the cycle. If you’re comparing results, you need to know when in the cycle they were taken. Time of day can matter too. Some markers have natural circadian variation, which is why timing should be consistent when appropriate. Supplements can affect results. Taking iron shortly before an iron study, for example, can temporarily increase serum iron and transferrin saturation and potentially give you a misleading picture. And strenuous exercise before pathology can temporarily alter several markers, including CK and some liver enzymes. This is why I always want to know the context around a blood test rather than simply looking at whether something has been flagged high or low.
