There are so many subtle steps included in the progress of making a vase like this, be it pressing in for long enough when you first initiate a pull, to properly ensure the clay has been pressed in evenly all the way around, thus ensuring an even lift. Or not allowing too much clay to gather on the trimming tool when scraping away the skirt around the base, as if too much does bunch up it can collide with the lower walls of the pot, indenting them and causing the piece to sway to one side.   Overtime you learn to incorporate these learnt steps into your making without thinking, yet at the start, memorising all of these, and in the correct order, amounts to a rather long list of points you’re trying to remember, and in the right order.   So, this video covers a few of those, a few of things I do in order to keep a vessel like this under control as I throw it. I’ve got a handful more of these pieces to make over the coming weeks, all of which will have linear protrusions attached to one side of them, a seam of sorts, a continuation of the pot’s lip that traverses down the side of the pot, creating an obvious direction to display it.   #satisfying #kneading #pottery #ceramics #handmade
