Goddd I hate TikTok trainers 😭 Number 1, this could’ve literally just been caught at a bad time. Number 2, y’all don’t know her horse, and it is very likely that they just do that because I know I’ve definitely seen horses that make faces like that. I’ve watched some of her riding videos, and her hands aren’t doing anything unnecessary. And before y’all say “she’s pulling too hard,” look at some top riders. They are doing way more, and you still don’t know her horse. You don’t know if they’re strong, if they have a tendency to rush at shows, if they need more support in certain situations, or what their normal way of going is. You cannot accurately judge someone’s entire riding from one picture where the horse happens to have its lip like that. If you actually have concerns about her riding, that’s fine, but acting like you can diagnose exactly what’s happening between a horse and rider from one frozen frame is ridiculous.

The horse’s expression also looks somewhat like a flehmen/“smiling” type expression, which can happen for reasons unrelated to pain. A true flehmen response usually involves the horse raising and curling its upper lip, stretching its neck, and often closing or partly closing the mouth. Horses do this to analyze interesting smells, especially pheromones though.. and that’s not what happening here.. A horse may open its mouth to evade pressure from the bit, particularly if: * the reins are relatively tight * the rider is making contact with the mouth * the bit doesn’t suit the horse * the horse is inexperienced or tense * the horse is trying to move its tongue or jaw around the bit.
