We never choose the genes we are born with. Each of us begins as a unique combination of DNA inherited from our parents - a biological lottery that influences our appearance, metabolism, abilities, vulnerabilities, and countless other traits. For most of history, humanity could only work with the combinations nature produced. Farmers selected plants and animals with useful traits generation after generation, slowly changing species through selective breeding. Today, we are beginning to replace part of that lottery with precision. Modern biotechnology allows scientists to identify individual genes, transfer useful traits between organisms, and directly modify DNA. Genetically modified crops can be engineered for resistance to pests, diseases, drought, or environmental stress. Their use is still restricted or debated in many parts of the world, but the principle represents a major shift: instead of only waiting for a useful genetic variation to appear, we can deliberately create one. And the same transition is beginning in medicine. Gene therapies and genome-editing technologies are being developed to correct or compensate for certain genetic changes - sometimes targeting the biological cause of a disease rather than only its consequences.
