William James' idea of the “educational variety” reminds us that people can arrive at truth, growth, and understanding through different experiences and different paths. This is important in recovery because what works for one person may not work exactly the same way for another. Some people connect deeply with meetings. Others connect through therapy. Some find strength through spirituality. Others begin with education, community, or simply hearing someone else's story. The lesson is not to reject something simply because it is different from what we already know. Stay teachable. Stay curious. Stay open minded. Recovery requires us to be willing to learn from experiences, people, and ideas that may challenge the way we have always thought.
