@chris.raroque: MISTAKE NO. 5/10: Turns out the order of your onboarding matters… 🥲 For every app I had built, I asked people to sign up before they went through onboarding. Not because I tested it. I just assumed that was the right order. Then someone told me to flip it. I started studying other consumer apps and realized that so many of them did the opposite. They let people go through onboarding, understand what the app could do for them, and only asked them to sign up at the end. So I changed my flow: Before: open app → sign up → onboarding After: open app → onboarding → sign up The percentage of people who signed up increased by about 40%. To be clear, that was roughly a 40% relative lift, not an increase of 40 percentage points. Still kind of insane for moving one screen. But it makes sense. At the beginning, signing up feels like a gate between you and an app you haven’t even tried. At the end, you’ve already answered the questions, personalized your experience, and understood why the app might be useful. Signing up feels like one tiny final step. My rule now: if someone doesn’t need an account to understand the value of your app, don’t ask them to sign up before you’ve shown them that value. The first-run order I use now: 1. Show them the value 2. Let them personalize the experience 3.
