When I had colitis and I was screaming in pain the nurse said, “you only want meds.” So, I looked at her and ripped out my IV AND ran 10 blocks home. She called me, “you have to come back for the IV antibiotics you have colitis.”

To be fair one time I went to the emergency room for a different reason after my position told me to go, and during this emergency room visit I have three anaphylactic episodes they discharged me an hour after one of them with unstable vitals my heart rate was 130 well laying down in my blood pressure was dropping their nurse even told the doctor that I wasn’t looking good. I was back an hour later with severe anaphylaxis , I was almost intubated in the ambulance thankfully I just needed BIPAP or a Cpap I don’t quite remember . Then I was admitted to the ICU and one of my organs got damaged. Even the doctor from the ICU said I never should’ve been discharged in the state that I was in.

Rightfully so, this isn’t done for a good reason, BUT if patients had to pay a co pay for their EMERGENCY VISIT for their chronic abdominal pain or sore throat, etc, the er would have significantly less patients

peds parents waiting an hour for an ear ache "when are we being seen?" well we have one doctor all 17 beds full with kids who cant breathe several admissions a trauma and probably a five day old 😐 you could be waiting 30min or 6hrs you are at an EMERGENCY room

I had gangrene and the ER tried to discharge me, the doctor said I had elevated white cells but nothing else was wrong so it must be a stomach virus (meanwhile in my papers they noted my gallbladder blockage from the CT, the doctor just didn’t give a fuck and thought I was med seeking despite having visible organ failure and no history of med seeking). Anyways I went to a second hospital and had emergency surgery to save me from the sepsis that can be caused by gangrene, and had to spend days in the hospital.

My ‘tism demands that I most respectfully and lovingly note that in the US we can’t talk about insurance/financials in the ED before the pt is roomed, unless that pt is using the VA. ✨EMTALA✨
