@nzoputa.e: This conversation is so personal to me and so dear to my heart because I know it’s one that can easily be misunderstood. From my little experience of living life, I’ve realized that the people who truly make it out of the “ghetto,” out of an ordinary life, or out of circumstances they were never supposed to escape, are usually the ones willing to break certain norms. If you want to be exceptional, at some point you have to be willing to become the exception. And that means you can’t blindly follow every rule simply because society handed it to you. We’re often taught that the traditional path is the safest path to success: go to school, follow the rules, do what everyone before you did, don’t take too many risks. But when you look at the people who built extraordinary lives, how many of them got there by doing exactly what everybody else was doing? The part people don’t talk about enough is that rebellion requires a ridiculous amount of courage. Most of the time, you’re not moving with some magical, blind confidence. You’re terrified. You’re making difficult decisions while everyone around you is telling you that you’re making a mistake. You’re going against the grain with absolutely no guarantee that your decision will work out. But somewhere inside you, you also know that staying complacent and following the same path everyone else followed may never give you the life you’re trying to build. So you make the choice. You take the risk. And you live with whatever comes with it. This particular conversation is especially sensitive to me because I know what my own “rebellion” has cost me. It cost me things I genuinely wish I didn’t have to lose. There were consequences. There were moments where I questioned whether I had made the right decisions at all. But that same rebellion also opened doors for me that I genuinely don’t think conformity ever would have. And I think that’s the uncomfortable truth about choosing an unconventional life: Sometimes the same decisions that cost you something are the decisions that create room for everything that comes next.

That's so true. Growing up, I was taught that as a woman I shouldn't aim for more. That our place was in the kitchen, and our greatest achievement was to marry young.
