If he wins his Senate race, El-Sayed could emerge as a national political figure whose influence extends well beyond Michigan. The Senate offers a platform a mayoralty cannot: a direct role in foreign policy, a national constituency, and a potential path to the presidency or vice presidency. Michigan makes that trajectory particularly consequential. As a pivotal state in the 2028 Democratic nominating process, El-Sayed could become an influential power broker within the party. He would also enter the Senate as perhaps its most prominent anti-Israel voice, elected from a state Donald Trump has carried twice. His campaign has already demonstrated the resonance of economic populism, challenging a Democratic establishment increasingly perceived as beholden to wealthy donors and corporate interests. He defeated a campaign backed by nearly $70 million in PAC spending. The argument was that he could not win. We heard the same argument about Zohran Mamdani. If El-Sayed prevails in November, this may be less the culmination of his political ascent than its beginning.
