@thecaseroom.daily: Baby Preston Davey’s case is one of the most heartbreaking child abuse cases I’ve covered. 💔 Preston was born in June 2022 and entered emergency foster care when he was only 5 days old. For the next 9 months, he was described as healthy, happy and thriving. In March 2023, an adoption panel approved Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley to become Preston’s prospective adoptive parents. Varley was a primary school teacher who had worked with children for around 10 years. On paper, Preston was being placed into what was supposed to be a safe, permanent home. But within weeks, disturbing signs began appearing. Varley began messaging people saying he found Preston “annoying” and that he was struggling to cope. Preston was taken to the hospital multiple times, and in July 2023 doctors discovered a fracture near his elbow. Different explanations were reportedly given for how the injury happened. Then came one of the most chilling pieces of evidence in the case. On July 10, Varley sent his partner a message saying: “Your son’s in hospital. I strangled him.” A minute later, he followed it with “Jokes.” Just 17 days later, Preston was dead. On July 27, 2023, the 13-month-old was rushed to the hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Varley claimed Preston had accidentally drowned in the bath, but medical evidence did not support that account. Investigators later said Preston was dry when he arrived at the hospital. The post-mortem revealed the true scale of what Preston had suffered. He had more than 40 injuries, including extensive bruising, internal injuries, a healing non-accidental fracture and evidence of physical and sexual abuse. After a 7-week trial, Jamie Varley was convicted of Preston’s murder and multiple other offenses. John McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of causing or allowing Preston’s death, child cruelty and sexual assault. Varley received a whole-life order, meaning he is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison. McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years. What makes this case so devastating is that Preston had already been through the care system and was finally supposed to be entering his forever home. Instead, he was failed by the very people who were trusted to protect him. Preston should be remembered as more than the victim at the center of a horrific case.
