The Enmeshed Parent have various other qualities such as living vicariously through their child, being popular with their child and their friends. At it's heart, I think it is a quality of unhealed childhood trauma where the parent tries to heal attachment through their child instead of providing healthy attachment to them - due to not having done their own work. They can also be highly emotionally immature. Check out info link in my story

My mom is like this. You used to say my moms my best friend. As I got older I went through a few really tough situations that needed a mom and realized I didnt have one.

My ex is doing this with our teenaged daughter. He's told her that he's the reason he gets out of bed most days, that he wouldn't know what to do if she wasn't around, that she's his reason to live.... I have no clue what to do other than tell her that what he's doing isn't OK and encourage her to have boundaries with him. She said sometimes it feels like it's a weird romantic relationship 🤦♀️

Not all of this applied, but as the parentified eldest daughter, I watched my mother go to therapy, get diagnosed with her debilitating ADHD that I intuitively was creating coping mechanism for her and now she is working SO HARD on herself. She continues to apologize for me and acknowledge (without any guilt tripping) that how enmeshed we were wasn't ok. I'm very proud of her, and even though our relationship has changed a lot over the years we are still close. I feel very lucky. Just wanted to share to remind people that it DOES happen sometimes. ❤️(But actual space and deliberately seeking out help as things got harder was a HUGE factor imho)
