Currently named Roysha White, the athlete is challenging the WNBA to face the controversy over transgender people in women's sports – and finally define what a "woman" really is. If the WNBA denies Royce the chance to play with his chosen gender, Royce says it would be "tantamount to gen**ide." His plan is to hold the league to the values it publicly claims - tolerance, inclusiveness, inclusivity - and says support for his bid has been strong privately even if public backing is "still a work in progress." White declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft soon after former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom announced the same intention. The WNBA collective bargaining agreement states that only players who are women are eligible. But the league has not yet specified their definition of "woman." "I'm certainly a Christian still," says Royce / Roysha, but "sometimes identifying as a black trans lesbian. For basketball purposes."
