This only happens when married couples are just sharing bills instead of truly building a life together. When you genuinely practise 1 + 1 = 1, all this competition over who works more, who earns more or who contributes more wouldn’t ever come up. Marriage is supposed to be a partnership, not a competition. A lot of people are honestly better off staying single. Also, as a married couple, there shouldn’t be this “every man for himself” mentality between you two. If you want to pick up an extra shift, you should first check with your wife and know what her plans are. Ideally, you should both have access to each other’s rota in advance so you can plan your availability properly, especially when childcare is involved. In this particular situation, I think it’s sheer irresponsibility on the part of the man. You don’t just pick up a shift without considering whether your wife might also be working that day and who will look after the children. These are things you communicate about and plan together, not decisions you make in isolation and expect the other person to somehow adjust.
