MANCHESTER UNITED VS MANCHESTER CITY— MATCH PREVIEW. Tomorrow's Manchester derby is a fascinating one because the two teams come into the game with very different momentum. Manchester City have made the stronger start to the Premier League season, while United have been inconsistent. But that does not mean United should be written off. WHY MANCHESTER UNITED CAN SURPRISE MANCHESTER CITY. United's league form has been frustrating, but there are reasons for optimism. Michael Carrick has an excellent home record, and United have shown that they can produce a completely different level of performance at Old Trafford. Carrick's home record since taking charge is particularly impressive. United also come into the derby after a 4–0 Champions League victory over Sabah, which should give the squad confidence and momentum before facing City. The biggest thing United need is discipline. They cannot allow City to control the midfield and dictate the tempo for 90 minutes. Kobbie Mainoo could be extremely important because of his ability to receive the ball under pressure, progress possession and help United compete in midfield. MANCHESTER CITY'S BIGGEST ADVANTAGE City are the favourites for a reason. They have won their opening three Premier League matches and have Erling Haaland in excellent scoring form. They also recently defeated Porto in the Champions League. BUT CITY AREN'T INVINCIBLE They have a new manager in Enzo Maresca and have gone through significant squad changes this summer. That means there are still elements of the team that are developing and adapting. Their recent narrow victory over Coventry also exposed some defensive vulnerability. That is where United can hurt them. THE KEY BATTLES I expect City to have more possession, but United should focus on quick transitions and attacking the spaces behind City's defence. Bruno Fernandes will be crucial between the lines, while players such as Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko can give City's defence plenty to think about. And don't completely dismiss Marcus Rashford. He has scored five goals against City in his career, so this is a fixture where his experience could matter. FAIR PREDICTION If this were being played purely on current Premier League form, City would be the obvious pick. But this is the Manchester derby, at Old Trafford. I think United will make this much more difficult for City than many people expect : Manchester United 2 – 2 Manchester City. HERE IS MY FINAL VERDICT Don't write Manchester United off. United may not have started the Premier League season the way their supporters wanted, but a derby is not decided by the league table. It is decided by mentality, intensity, tactical discipline and who handles the pressure better.
