you can never win as a patient. if you're in pain, you'd better be screaming, but it can't sound fake otherwise you're drug seeking. if you don't scream, then obviously it's not that bad or urgent. you can't be upset, or angry. you can't call out a doctor/practitioner/nurses disrespectful behavior. you must act exactly and they think you should. if you don't, you're fucked.

We once had a patient who had post-op delirium, but started to clear after 3 days. She said, “I think I said some terrible things, can you tell everyone I’m sorry?” So I did, and there was 1 LPN who said, “I don’t care, she called me a bitch! There is no excuse for that!” It changed how I thought about that LPN, I lost respect for her.

I really do agree with this, as a “frequent flyer” with many medical issues. I treat those in the medical profession with so much respect. Every time I have been reactive it has been because I was either not in control of myself or because I was being dismissed over serious issues. I even send apology cards sometimes when I recover, that’s how much we all want to be acting properly.

If you're in the medical field, you are going to be interacting with people in crisis. People in crisis may not be kind or polite. Sometimes they will even be aggressive. Their lives still matter. You are meeting people on the worst day of their lives. Have empathy.

i once had a nurse tell me I was constipated. I had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for 6 years and was going, with blood, 7-10 times a day. the way i looked at them when they said that. I saw my consultant and when he read my notes he added NOT CONSTIPATION and underlined it 5 times 😂😂 he was cool

we obviously need to do more to protect nurses in the work but I think it's ridiculous how people act like it's completely out of line for any patient to be exhibiting aggressive behavior when there are literally HUNDREDS of medical conditions which can cause an otherwise COMPLETELY NORMAL person to behave that way. Like they are literally at the place where they're supposed to be getting help with those conditions and were villainizing them for having symptoms consistent with those conditions

You'd think people would understand being ill, poorly and in many cases, literally at death's door, might not make you the most pleasant person to be around. Even acts of aggression or hostility, like your experience has shown, can be SYMPTOMS. I'm afraid we've gone too far with "explanations aren't excuses" because I fear someone sundowning or having unmanageable pain yelling at you is actually a genuine excuse. Healthcare is one place you do not enter if you need your ego stroked.

A lot of healthcare workers forget they chose to enter this industry knowing that every single person they come across has a legal RIGHT to receive care. That doesn't get taken away because the patient is an asshole.

13 years ago my dad had a serious car accident with head injury. After a few days he got discharged because he was "getting aggressive". Wasn't until months later that he got referred to concussion clinic and by then it was too late, he got diagnosed with a moderate-severe brain injury and hasn't been able to work since

This is just one of the small ways that medical racism kills too. Genuinely every single black sickle cell patient I’ve seen online has stories of being completely denied care or treated like they’re drug seeking as they’re actively dying, etc.
