The nine month campaign, initiated in October 2016, constituted a protracted episode of urban attrition, as Iraqi forces advanced neighbourhood by neighbourhood against I*** before converging upon the densely configured Old City, where combat assumed an exceptionally destructive and claustrophobic character. Concrete was pulverised into rubble, streets were transformed into vectors of lethal confrontation, and the architectural substratum of civilian existence was progressively subordinated to the imperatives of warfare. Tens of thousands of structures were damaged or obliterated, leaving millions of tons of conflict debris dispersed throughout the city. What this video preserve is therefore not merely devastation, but the material sediment of urban warfare, a metropolis physically reconstituted by violence until homes, schools, hospitals and streets became remnants of a civilian geography dismantled from within.
