That sounds crazy to me. In Italy, during pregnancy, we get tested every month for CMV, toxoplasmosis, rubella and more. If we test positive for anything, we’re immediately referred to specialist infectious disease centers that deal specifically with pregnancy, where we can receive targeted treatment to prevent the infection from being passed on to the fetus

I’m sorry this happened. Instead of being angry at providers, you should be angry at the current government, which has cut off all funding for things related to infectious disease. It stopped funding anything that targets any specific group, including pregnant women. Pregnant women are DEI boarding to the pregnant so don’t get the wrong funding. We always wanna blame the people closest to us and our situation and we always avoid the government entities that are preventing us from having more knowledge about infections, including developing vaccines. My sympathies for you, your daughter and your family. We need to continue to do more to protect everyone, especially vulnerable people like pregnant women, infants, and children.

As a NICU nurse who takes care of a lot of cmv related babies, I’m very surprised that they don’t test for this during pregnancy. I asked my OB and she said “risk is low.” 😳 I’m sorry, um but in my world it’s not.

testing isn't universal because 1. over half of moms will have had a CMV infection in the past. so you will likely be positive for antibodies and blood tests are unable to tell when the infection occured and if you are not having an active infection then the risk to the baby is very low. so testing really doesn't give your team valuable information. 2. testing does not reliably predict whether baby has been infected or will be affected 3. while antivirals are now starting to be prescribed during pregnancy for active infections theres no standard guideline yet. 4. overall rarity of cases. only 0.5% of babies born each year will be born with congenital CMV. all this means the current standard is to test mom if there are active symptoms of infection or imagining shows concerning growth patterns with baby.. some cases will still slip through which is extremely sad. but testing everybody likely wouldn't reduce rates of infection due to current testing abilities.. your baby is adorable and I wish you and your family the best

My brothers 23 and my stepmom got this in pregnancy. He’s profoundly deaf, partially sited, and has other health issues. Buttttt he’s just passed criminology in university and has already secured a job in the field. It won’t hold her back I promise x

as a midwife in greece, it’s part of the monthly blood tests during pregnancy to check for igG/igM antibodies of cmv and toxoplasma!

CMV isn't screened bc most people get the virus in childhood and dont contract it again/are immune to it by adulthood. it's rare for adults to get plus during pregnancy it's rare. it's not a serious infection but has bad affects potentially on developing fetuses

I have never heard of this until I donated blood and was told my blood does not contain CMV which means it can be used on neonatal babies. This is really not spoken about! She’s a gorgeous little girl and I really do hope the CI has a huge positive impact on her 🥰

I work in clinical research, and we’re currently developing a vaccine aimed at preventing CMV. I wish more people knew about CMV and the risks it can pose during pregnancy. I love that you shared your story and helped bring awareness to this. I’m really hopeful that drug development will give us an effective way to prevent this very soon. ❤️

yay for cochlear implants! my mother in law was one of the first EVER to receive them! A lot of opinions about them in the deaf community but stick to your momma gut and integrate sign language if you desire!

My son was born with cmv. He’s 15 now, has bilateral cochlear implants, near perfect speech. We also use ASL and he has an interpreter at school. He’s thriving and doing great in all areas of his life.

Its crazy how many mums have commented on this post of their babies having caught CMV but theres no advice or guidance from the midwives of the UK but other countries get offered blood tests for it!
