I suspect that they believed that they could develop AI quickly enough that they would replace their need for our labour and also be able to exact violence to protect their privilege. Thankfully, they couldn't advamce fast enough

During the gilded age- it wasn't like they were anymore moral but they understood how valuable & important fostering a good reputation is to changing a society. Besides offering technology that greatly improved & changed the lives of Americans overall like trains & cars - they built libraries & put up charities. Not cus they actually cared but they knew they needed the goodwill. Tech fostered NO goodwill & offers nothing but ads & ai that isn't accurate 90% of the time

I live in Southern California; we’re in a drought & under a heat dome. Lots of apartments & homes in my hood have no built in a/c or quality insulation. We have experienced several blackouts in this heat. But selling us on building data centers that run 24/7 a-c and suck up fresh water for computers is a “nonstarter.”
