@healingwithhonea: We spend so much time telling seniors that this is supposed to be one of the best years of their lives, but we don’t talk nearly enough about how much uncertainty comes with knowing that everything familiar is about to change. Whether they’re going to college, trade school, starting a job, traveling, or doing something completely different, they’re leaving behind routines, friendships, teachers, family support, and an environment they’ve known for years. That is a huge transition, and we need to be more honest with young people about what that can feel like. Huge shoutout to @mikekleba for the video I stitched and for putting words to a part of senior year that doesn’t get talked about enough. #teenmentalhealth #HighSchoolSenior #lifetransitions #collegementalhealth #parentingteens

It’s strange people thought this was about elderly people. 🤔

I thought we were talking about senior citizens and the final year of life until a ways into the video.

I am glad to have come across this. my new senior came to me yesterday to ask to take to a therapist. IDK what is going on, but I imagine he is feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and stressed. I want to be there for him, but understand there are things he won't want to talk to me about.

So happy this came across my feed because as a senior who is the youngest I feel like my parents just expected me to know this stuff because I seen my older two siblings go through it. But I don’t, this is my first time being a senior and it’s good to know that it’s normal to feel stressed and anxious about what comes next, but also excited. 😊🫶🏻✨

Why are people confused that they’re talking about seniors in high school they said senior year not your senior years. It’s pretty clear.

The problem is AP classes. Seniors should save the college work for college and take it easy senior year.

By your senior year you’re already gone especially small town, no 4 year college. You just wake up and everyone is gone.

What’s interesting is my son has been friends with kids in grades above him his whole high school career. Now all of those kids are gone and he’s the senior. I have prepped him before this year for this by saying now it’s his turn to befriend the younger kids and be a good leader to them before he’s gone. Last year, I told him to enjoy the year with his friends and girlfriend. So I think this proverbial peak of achievement and bless was experienced last year for him and this year is more of a transition than anything else..

Thank you for saying this. Just dropped off my daughter in college yesterday. Senior year kicked both of our butts mentally speaking. I almost lost her. The cumulative pressure & the expectations were so strong. No one talks about how hard senior year is & unless you've lived it, you don't know.

As a school counselor, I see so many, including my own, kind of self sabotaging things bc of the angst with everything.

As a HS teacher, my seniors last year went THROUGH it. It ranged like crazy. Mental health struggles coming to a head, pushing boundaries as a means of trying to feel good about leaving, and yet for others, they really came into their own. Trying to remind them always that life is a PROCESS, that it’s good to celebrate but it’s also ok if things aren’t perfect.

I have shared with my teen that my first year out if high school was the loneliest i had ever been. I share with him so he can begin to prepare for this transition and have come up with some strategies to help him connect with like minded people in college.

I’m surprised people aren’t talking to their kids about this. My son just started senior year. He’s been working with a mentor from the college he will be attending next year for the last year. He was able to dual enroll with this university. I feel like preparing your kids for college or whatever they want to do next is part of parenting.
