i did not know what to do with it when it arrived. that is the honest version. a hug from a stranger in switzerland at 3:22am is not something i had a protocol for, not something my nervous system had a pre-built response to. the other forms of care i had received in those weeks had familiar shapes. the meals dropped off and the check-in texts and the you are doing great from people who loved me and knew my face. those had containers i already owned. i knew how to receive them because i had been receiving things in those shapes my whole life. but this was a different shape entirely. a hug that crossed an ocean in the middle of the night from someone who did not know my name or my face or anything about me except that i was awake and she was awake and she had decided that was sufficient grounds for kindness. and i sat there holding it, this containerless thing, not knowing what shelf to put it on, and then just. crying. not sad crying. the other kind. the kind that happens when something reaches a place that has not been reached in a while, when care arrives in a shape so unexpected that your body does not know what to do except let go of something it has been holding. i have thought about her so many times since 3:22am. she does not know she did anything significant. she just sent a hug into the dark. and it landed on someone who needed to learn that kindness does not require a container or a history or even a name. just the same dark. just the same hour. just the willingness to reach across it. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
