Lake Ontario gets its name from an Indigenous term, most likely from the Wendat (Huron) language. The name is generally traced to “ontaríio”, meaning something like “lake of shining waters” or “beautiful lake.” French explorers adopted the name as Lac Ontario in the 17th century. Interestingly, the province of Ontario was later named after the lake—not the other way around.
