the story built itself so gradually i did not notice i was living inside it. that is the thing about the stories we tell ourselves at 3am. they do not announce themselves as stories. they arrive as facts, as obvious things, as the kind of knowledge you do not need to verify because it is simply the way things are. everyone else’s baby sleeps. everyone else figured something out that i have not figured out yet. there is a version of this that other people are living where the nights are not like this and i missed the thing that would have gotten me there. i did not decide to believe that. i did not sit down and reason my way into it. it was just the water i was swimming in by week four and i had stopped noticing it was water at all. and the thing about a story that has become water is that you cannot argue yourself out of it. you cannot read something or be told something that punctures it because the story is not sitting in the part of your brain that processes arguments. it is sitting somewhere older and quieter and more convinced. the only thing that punctures a story like that is evidence that arrives before the story can get its hands on it. visual evidence. immediate evidence. the dots. because the dots do not give the story time to reframe them. they are just there, hundreds of them, awake, and the story has to contend with what the eyes have already taken in before the brain can spin it into something that fits the old version. that is why it worked. not because it was convincing. because it was faster than the story. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momlife #momtok
