⚠️Everyone needs to look up Elizabeth Loftus - Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus transformed how we understand human memory. Her research demonstrated that memory is not always a perfect recording of an event. Information introduced after something happens can influence what people later report remembering sometimes without them realising anything has changed. In one famous experiment, participants watched footage of a car accident and were later asked questions using different wording. Simply describing the cars as having “smashed” rather than “hit” affected estimates of speed, and participants exposed to the stronger wording were later more likely to report broken glass, despite there being none in the footage. This is what makes reconstructive memory so unsettling. Remembering can feel like accessing the past exactly as it happened, while the memory itself may have been influenced by later information, expectations and suggestion. Confidence in a memory and accuracy of that memory are not always the same thing.
