My favourite "theory"/metaphor is that the act itself of going to the Underworld IS looking back. Orpheus will ALWAYS look back because he will ALWAYS go after her.❤️🩹

I saw something a little bit ago that there’s a version where Eurydice didn’t know Orpheus couldn’t look behind him and she’s trying to get his attention or something but because she’s a shade he couldn’t hear her or something, which is even more sad. Please correct me if this is wrong, I think it was a comment I saw lol

One thing I like to often ponder about is the fact that you'll NEVER know what it's like to be in this situation, so you can't say with confidence if you'd look back or not. Until you're put in such a critical situation, you would've never known what you would've acted like. You can say you wouldn't dare to look back, but all the desperation in the situation lingering with doubt could've driven it a different way. I thought the same of myself, being so confident in my own actions, until I figured out there's certain situations that just makes you act with utmost emotion and desire for something rather than pure rationality.

I love this story so much, and I realized that Orpheus loved Eurydice so much, which is why he looked back. Because to love is to look back, to always think about and care for the person you love. So, what I did was ask my boyfriend not to look back at me while I was walking behind him. He kept saying, “Why won’t I look at you?” Hahahahaha🤣 And I caught him using his phone’s camera to look at me🥹

In the version I know, Eurydice doesn’t just simply vanish either, she turns into a pillar of salt, forever stuck at the Gates of the underworld, implying that now they can’t even be together in Death, and all Orpheus can do is sit and cry alone at the gates for the rest of his life because despite his doubt and mistrust he doesn’t want her to be alone either, also I apologize for the emotional damage this might cause, the crimson waterfalls have befallen me and stories like this make me hella emotional in general,
