@nikkiwalsh.adaptfit: I KNOWWWW what some of the comments are going to say… 👀 “But SSDI and SSI are for people who can’t work.” And THAT is exactly why I think we need to have this conversation♿️ I’m incredibly proud that I’ve been able to build a career, work, earn money and create a life for myself after becoming paralyzed. I WANT to work. I WANT to be successful. I WANT to be financially independent. But earning money didn’t suddenly erase the cost of being disabled... My wheelchair didn’t disappear. My medical supplies didn’t disappear. My accessibility needs didn’t disappear. My disability didn’t disappear. In fact, I have to spend over $15,000 A YEAR just on the supplies I need to pee and poop. Not vacations. Not luxuries. Not things that make my life more convenient. Basic. Bodily. Functions. And that’s only ONE piece of the financial reality of living with a disability. So no, this isn’t me saying I should receive unlimited benefits regardless of income. It’s me asking why our system so often treats “able to earn money” and “disabled” like they can’t exist at the same time. Disabled people SHOULD be encouraged to work if they’re able. We SHOULD be encouraged to build careers. We SHOULD be encouraged to earn more and become financially independent. But becoming successful doesn’t magically eliminate the additional expenses that come with disability. My paycheck changed. My spinal cord didn’t♿️ So I genuinely want to hear from y’all!! How do we create a system that encourages disabled people to succeed WITHOUT making support and success feel like opposing choices? #DisabilityAwareness #DisabledAndProud #WheelchairUser #DisabilityAdvocacy #SpinalCordInjury
the old income rules to need be rewritten. they don't account for modern expenses. it's not 1991 anymore.

The whole social security system (including SSDI) needs to be reformed with livable amounts in this day and age. These small checks don’t even cover rent…. Forget food… utilities…medical expenses. Things most people never have to think about!!! It’s disgusting in the greatest nation ‼️

I know the feeling. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, severe pancreatic insufficiency, no gallbladder, and now the doctors think a paralyzed stomach. I also have had multiple shoulder surgeries on each arm. I only have half a right hip, both pudenal and obturator nerve damage. And I have an almost 5 inch stent in my left iliac vein. My stomach is in pain everyday and I struggle with sitting, bending, and stairs. Yet they say I dont qualify for disability. Like it makes zero sense.

According to some expert creators on this app, if you can use a phone - that means you’re not disabled 🤯 Wild take … the system sucks, hoping you get the support you need and deserve

wait, in america insurance doesn't cover catheters etc? I'm in Germany and health insurance covers my catheters each month. the only out of pocket money I have to pay per year is 1% of my after tax income. this covers my physio, medications, etc everything health related

I’m a nurse but turns out I’m super good at helping patients file for aid, all kinds of aid. Like making phone calls, staying up on paperwork etc. I’m a psych nurse who does part time paperwork to help house and get benefits filed and approved, I’m so enraged at denials sometimes. Like my man is wheelchair bound and blind in one eye, homeless and asking for some BASIC help

sign up with ABLE or look into it, it helps people with disabilities, you can put money into that and SS can't use it as income

What you shared makes me feel heard and your exactly right being on disability isn’t a free card it’s simply still fighting for us what are needs are what we still have to do to meet basic needs, not oh free time, vacations, spend time thinking about nothing, being able to do the things we want. The reality is even though we might be on disability it doesn’t automatically get better and go away. I think it starts with more of us sharing about how it really affects us and how hard it is to live in poverty when it’s susposed to be there to help us get the access to what we need most. Being disabled is incredibly hard, and until your in these shoes no one will ever understand the full impact of what it’s like.

This is so unfair. My partner is disabled. We see you. The rules need to change for the better. This lifestyle is so expensive.
