@asaintaday: 🌿 The Palestinian Mystic Known as the Little Arab — St Mary of Jesus Crucified — August 26th A humble Carmelite whose extraordinary mystical experiences, devotion to the Holy Spirit, and joyful trust in God made her one of the most remarkable Palestinian saints of modern times. ——— More about St Mary of Jesus Crucified: Mariam Baouardy was born in 1846 near Nazareth to a Melkite Greek Catholic family. Orphaned at three, she survived a violent attack as a young woman after refusing to abandon her faith. Believing her dead, her attacker left her in an alley, but Mariam later said that a mysterious woman dressed in blue nursed her back to health. After working as a servant, she entered religious life in France and became a Discalced Carmelite, taking the name Mary of Jesus Crucified. Though unable to read or write fluently, she displayed striking spiritual insight and urged greater devotion to the Holy Spirit. Witnesses reported ecstasies, levitation, visions, prophecy and the stigmata. Mariam herself disliked attention and repeatedly asked that such experiences be concealed. She helped establish a Carmel in Mangalore, India, and later founded the Carmelite monastery in Bethlehem. She died in 1878, aged only 32, after developing gangrene following a fall at the building site.
