The event: Roman general Julius Caesar set fire to enemy ships in the harbor during a siege in Alexandria. The damage: The fire spread from the docks into parts of the city. Historical sources disagree on whether it burned the main library or just a storage warehouse containing scrolls. The aftermath: Many scrolls were lost, but the institution itself continued to function afterward. Roman military campaigns: The remaining buildings suffered major damage during the military reconquests of Emperor Aurelian in 272 AD and Emperor Diocletian in 297 AD.
