Honestly, it doesn’t really matter which one you hook up first or last…. I’m guessing it’s a 6 V battery in the mower.

It doesn’t matter. Obviously the cables were crossed or a shorted batt cell.

this is the result of a dry battery.. TECHNICALLY you are supposed to put the ground cable on the frame as far away from the positive battery as you can.. then an arc between the two can't ignite the gas inside the battery. also don't stand in front of the dead battery for this reason.

Not suppose to do it with the car on. With car off, you are using just the 12 volt battery. With car on, it has too much amps and will mess up the lawnmower battery.

I always hook to dead battery first the positive to running vehicle then negative. Have never had any issues in my 58 years on Earth.

That sounds like reverse polarity or short circuit.

Hooked the cables up backwards. Better go wash that battery acid off before it burns you

Don’t matter what’s first or last when you hook them up to the wrong terminal.

Yeah connect neg or positive first never makes a difference. Connecting them backwards for sure, also car battery much more bigger than lawnmower battery…

NO! you attach the positive so you can attach the negative last off the battery. For those that dont know what happened here. He may have attached the positive first but he attached the negative directly to the battery that was leaking hydrogen which ignited because he sparked right at the battery instead of away from the battery on the chassis ground...

It helps IF you connect positive to positive (red+red) and negative to negative (black +black) do NOT let the clamps touch each other otherwise it’s going to make a melted mess and likely blow up your battery. Doesn’t matter which one you connect first as long as you connect them correctly. I prefer a jump box to jump start mowers and such these days. It’s much easier and you don’t have to have a vehicle close by to do it.
