@konah619: Robert Lee Parton never learned to read or write. He worked the land from childhood, and the school was always on the other side of a fence he could never cross. He carried that shame all his life. Dolly, his daughter, saw him carry it. She couldn’t give him back his childhood. She couldn’t put a book in his hands as a child and erase the lost years. But she could keep other children from growing up with that same deprivation. In 1995, she founded the Imagination Library in Sevier County, Tennessee, the very place where her father had grown up unable to spell his own name. She started by sending books to the children in her county. She didn’t stop there. The program crossed borders. Today, it has delivered nearly 150 million books to children in five countries—one per month, free of charge—from birth until they start school. Robert Lee lived to see it. Before he died, in 2000, he knew that what had been born from his own deprivation had become something enormous. Dolly never had children of her own. She had millions—one for every child who now opens one of her books before bed. Her father couldn’t read her a story when she was a child. She made sure no other parent would have that excuse. As long as a child, anywhere in the world, opens one of those books, Dolly Parton will keep telling a story. And deep within that story, he will always be there.
