@parentstogether: Families in Indiana have been in the dark for two weeks. A huge storm on August 11 caused a massive power outage. Thousands are still without power in the state, most of them in Gary, Indiana. Children aren't at school. Food is spoiling. Grocery store shelves are empty. People can't earn a paycheck. Residents want to know why this city, that's majority Black, has been without resources and support for so long. And data centers are looming large in the conversation. There are 23 active data centers in the State of Indiana, and 121 more planned to be built. They require a ton of energy to operate, and local residents are largely footing the bill. So now Gary families are paying even more for the power they currently do not have... The power company, called NIPSCO, says power should be restored to everyone by tonight. Let's let the people of Gary know their story will not be ignored. my brain cant comprehend how the residents have to pay for what rich companies should be able to be paying and covering for themselves. so messed up. the way this is getting worse is so horrible and sad. no one is safe anymore. all we have is ourselves and one another; those willing to be each other's village 🫶 take care and stay safe all.

Just like Flint, Michigan— it’s always marginalized communities that struggle first and the most! This is intentional. You won’t see any data centers going up in wealthy neighborhoods!

But there’s an important distinction for Gary, Indiana. Of the materials I mentioned earlier as having been detected or associated with Gary-area soils, groundwater or industrial deposits, the ones that would catch my attention first are lithium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, lead, arsenic, barite/barium-related material, and possibly silicon/silica-related resources because several of those commodities appear on the federal critical-minerals list.

I can not imagine having babies and toddlers without having power. These people need to be brought to hotels. What is going to happen to the elderly that live alone? People have probably passed away and haven’t been found yet. This is insane!
