As a retired HS Science/STEM Educator, with a research background(also taught K-8th grade Summer Science School), I taught the importance of critical thinking skills & problem solving in my classes. Lots of labs & hands on projects, activities, to help apply the information learned. Many of my students went on to pursue degrees in the STEM fields. Our educational system has become a cookie cutter system, everyone is taught the same, teachers of today do not want to exert more energy than necessary. All the testing proves it!! A person with a doctorate in Science should be leading the education department!!

“getting subjects fed to you for the first couple of hours of your day” is an insane statement to be uttered out loud by the Secretary of Education. There is absolutely zero pedagogical justification for this to even be a thought.
