As a woman that grew up a poor little girl in rural southern Appalachia…I feel like I’ve lost a close relative. All the women in my family would sit out on the porch in the summer snapping beans while listening to her records. She was playing in the car on the way to bury my granny. She was the voice my husband and I danced to first on our wedding day…ugh she was everything 😭 I’m heartbroken.

she did so much for us in east tn, she was always the first to help us like when Helene and the gatlinburg wildfires hit, she was the first to step up. She started her imagination library here and they just renamed children’s after her. Not only that, she changed the narrative about us and showed people the we weren’t backwards hillbillies. She always gave back to us, and for that we will always love her 🫶🏼
