@tonymian_: Everyone knows the Hollywood sign. Almost nobody knows it had a rival. HOLLYWOODLAND went up in 1923 as a temporary billboard for a housing tract in Beachwood Canyon — 18 months and then gone. It worked so well it never came down. Charles Toberman was watching. He'd built Grauman's Chinese, the Egyptian, the Roosevelt, the El Capitan, and the Hollywood Bowl, and by 1924 he was developing his own hillside above Franklin. So he built a bigger sign: permanent steel, red neon, spelling OUTPOST across the ridge above Runyon Canyon. At the time, the largest neon sign in America. It was advertising Outpost Estates — Spanish and Mediterranean homes, red tile roofs, architectural review before you could build, and every utility buried underground, one of the first neighborhoods in the country to do it. Toberman called it the jewel in the hills. A hundred years later, lower Outpost still looks almost exactly the way he built it. Then the war came, the blackouts hit, and the sign went dark. It came down and nobody hauled it off. It sat in the brush for sixty years until residents found it and brought it back down to the trail. It's still there. Thousands of hikers pass it every year without knowing what it is. Have you seen it? #hollywood #hollywoodsign #outpost #outpostestates
