Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Chief Imam of Masjid al-Haram, has described the celebration of Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, as an innovation (bid'ah) with no established basis in the Qur’an and Sunnah. In his lecture, Al-Sudais stated that the Prophet peace be upon him, his Companions and the early generations of Muslims did not celebrate his birthday as a religious occasion. The imam cited prophetic warnings against introducing new practices into the religion, describing Mawlid celebrations as a religious practice that was introduced after the time of the Prophet and his Companions. He also criticised some practices associated with contemporary Mawlid celebrations, including gender mixing.
