I read Andrew Ng's AI Engineering Skills Map against OpenAI's live FDE posting, line by line. A resume full of RAG, MCP, and model names won't carry you. 1. Lead with the deployment. FDEs own discovery, scoping, system design, the build, and the production rollout. Build one real system for someone else, ground it in their data, ship it, and measure who adopted it. 2. Make evals the story. Ng calls a disciplined eval and error-analysis loop the most important trait in a great AI systems builder. Your resume should expose what failed, how you measured it, and what improved. 3. Shape the build with a customer. Show the messy middle: what they asked for, what they needed, what you cut, and the tradeoff you made. The playbook is 3 artifacts. One end-to-end deployment. One eval-driven reliability story.
