actually i think the other picture by R.harris is an osprey which i also reccomend looking up as they consistently are staring you down menacingly or looking absolutely flabbergasted

Okay this sent me down a rabbit hole too. I was interested in seeing what the secretary bird's closest cousins are. They're the sole surviving member of their family, Sagittariidae. Apparently they're not particularly close to any other birds of prey? They're the basal most branch of the accipitriformes, being sister to/splitting off from the lineage of all the other ones (Accipitridae and the Ospreys). There's apparently a fossil cousin from France. Pelargopappus. And also Apatosagittarius, an extinct animal that looks a lot like a secretarybird, but from Nebraska of all places? And it's a mimic (Accipitridae) through convergent evolution? The heck is going on with these guys?
