@jasonwalker.co: I have not told a joke in four months. I have been making points, and I did not notice the swap while it was happening. Sarcasm is what humor turns into when there is nobody left in the room. A joke needs a second person inside it. You have to guess, for half a second, what the man across the table will find funny, and that guess is a small piece of attention spent on him. Sarcasm needs none of that. It runs on my own position and nothing else, which is why it is the last thing standing when everything else is gone. It is also the cheapest thing I can say that still sounds sharp. There is a reason it shows up in the heavy years and not the light ones. Sarcasm is fast. You can produce it while your head is somewhere else entirely, and most of the time that is exactly where it is. What I did not expect was what it does to the work. On a call, sarcasm reads as a man who already knows how this ends. People hear that before they hear the offer. Nobody buys from somebody who has plainly finished the conversation in his own head. Inside a team it is worse and much quieter. A person brings you a problem while it is still small. You make it funny. He learns something that afternoon, and the next small thing never reaches you at all, and the one after that arrives when it costs real money. Somebody will say sarcasm is just a sense of humor with the sugar taken out. Sometimes it is, and plenty of sharp people are a pleasure to sit with. The tell is who it is aimed at. Humor is aimed at the thing. Sarcasm is aimed at the person holding it. ... Getting it back has nothing to do with being funnier. It comes back the first time somebody's news is more interesting to me than my answer to it.
