Side rule: don't insist everyone in the room get together to play a game if they're socializing fine without it, propose it once the room has died down a little. Some people don't want whatever they were doing to be interrupted by a long activity. One time my brother and I were at this party. While I was chatting up this woman, my brother brought out a game and announced "okay we're all playing this!" and now my 1on1 convo with the woman was gone.

when i play with my family I bring my phone to be ready because in sub 5 minutes I know everyone will be gone disengaged or crashing out over rules they try to make up as they go so my phone is there so I can play games where people actually engage

This is why I don’t like play certain games with my family, cause inevitably someone gets up to go to the bathroom or something takes a little too long and half the people decide it’s an appropriate time for a smoke break and next thing you know what was a 5 minute break turns into 20 and no one remembers who’s turn it was.
